Spend a full day birding in the cloud forest of Cerro Verde Park, Laguna Verde volcanic lagoon, shade-grown coffee plantations, and along the scenic routes between these spots. This intensive birding tour targets highland and endemic regional bird species of Southern Mexico and Northern Central America.

  • Key species include Brown-backed Solitaire, Cinnamon-bellied Flowerpiercer, Bushy-crested Jay, White-faced Quail-Dove, Rufous-collared Sparrow, White-throated Thrush, Green-throated Mountain-gem, Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Bar-winged Oriole, White-winged Tanager, and White-naped Brushfinch.
  • Additional highlights are Singing Quail, Blue-and-white Mockingbird, Slate-throated Redstart, Eye-ringed Flatbill, and Rufous-browed Wren, restricted to high elevations and corridors in the Apaneca–Ilamatepec mountain range.
  • Encounter resident species like White-throated Magpie-Jay, Cinnamon-bellied Saltator, Spot-breasted Oriole, Yellow-winged Tanager, and Violet Sabrewing year-round, along with Neotropical migrants from October to late April.
  • Enjoy well-maintained trails, good infrastructure, and breathtaking landscapes adorned with towering volcanoes, fertile valleys, sugar cane fields, cornfields, and shade-grown coffee plantations.
  • Visit colonial-style towns and Cerro Verde Park, which sits at an elevation of around 6,670 feet, offering pleasant weather and excellent birding conditions.

Itinerary Details

Early departure from San Salvador around 4 am from your hotel. Start the day birding in the Cerro Verde park grounds, local gardens, park trails, and the hotel Casa 1800 grounds. We’ll explore nearby spots and bird from the road in local shade-grown coffee plantations, stopping along the way to add species to our day list. At Laguna Verde, we’ll take a one-mile hike on flat terrain to observe the area’s bird species. Our final stops could include a local coffee plantation near Concepcion de Ataco and the town of Ataco, where we can stroll to see colorful murals, experience local daily life, and spot birds in town.
